In 1979, McDonald's introduced an innocuous new item on its menu, the Happy Meal. Happy Meals were aimed at kids, and they came with a toy inside. Initially, these toys weren't very elaborate. In time, however, these toys became much more sophisticated, oftentimes being a tie-in to an existing product or motion picture (the first was 1979's Star Trek: The Motion Picture). At first, these toys could only be purchased with the meal. However, partially due to their success with collectors, McDonald's made them available separately.
Soon, other fast food chains followed McDonald's lead and offered their own version of Happy Meals, complete with a toy. Now, whenever a family-friendly movie is due for release, the fast food tie-in is an important part of the marketing strategy. For collectors, however, it can be easy to miss an item, or even an entire line.
