By the early 1990s, PEZ dispensers, which had once been extremely popular, were almost forgotten by the general public. Then, thanks to an episode of Seinfeld, PEZ underwent a resurgence of popularity, so much so that some collectors began their collection only after watching the Seinfeld episode. (In the episode, if you don't recall, Jerry and Elaine ruined a piano recital when Jerry puts a Tweety Bird PEZ dispenser on Elaine's knee.)
PEZ candies were invented in 1927 in Austria. It wasn't until 1955 that the now-iconic PEZ dispenser first appeared. Since that time, however, they have entered into popular culture like few other toys have. Most people, in fact, can't really remember what the candy tastes like, but everyone knows the dispensers.
PEZ dispensers, of course, consist of a tube into which the candy is placed. On top of the tube is a head, usually of a famous character of some kind. (Although, rather bizarrely, some PEZ dispensers featured a hand on top.) When you flip the top of the dispenser, a PEZ candy comes out the mouth. Even before the Seinfeld episode, PEZ dispensers were immensely popular with collectors.
