It's hard to believe that the first episode of The Simpsons first aired in December of 1989. To put it in perspective, when The Simpsons first went on the air, the Berlin Wall was still up, the Soviet Union was still together, and President George H.W. Bush was finishing the first year of his presidency. The Simpsons aired on the FOX network, which had existed for a few years but hadn't had a breakaway hit yet. The Simpsons changed all of that.
The Simpsons has so permeated popular culture that it's easy to take the show for granted. The Simpsons was the first truly adult cartoon, combining satirical, subversive and truly funny material in a unique pop cultural blend. Numerous books, articles, websites, and, of course, toys are dedicated to this unique phenomenon. The Simpsons is so legitimized that it even appears in the Oxford English Dictions (Homer's ubiquitous exclamation, "D'oh!," which fans of the show can tell you appears in the script as [annoyed grunt]). The Simpsons, in its heyday, took television to dizzying heights that few other shows have approached, let alone reached.
In the initial wave of Simpsons popularity, a number of licensed Simpsons-related items were available for sale. (And, in typical self-referential fashion, the show made fun of this on numerous occasions.) Then there was a lull of a few years before Simpsons merchandise again appeared.
